About us
Christ Church is a joint United Reformed and Methodist Church. Our worship is varied and interesting, thoughtful and joyous. New visitors are always welcome. Children are always welcome and there is a Sunday School every Sunday, sometimes larger and sometimes smaller.
You will find an open and friendly congregation here, with lots of social activities to join in with for young and old. We have about 70 or more people attending worship every Sunday morning, and on Sunday evenings we have a range of alternative worship events through the month. We are a united congregation from the former Stocksbridge Methodist Church (in Deepcar) and Stocksbridge United Reformed Church (also known as ‘Stocksbridge Congs’ from years ago).

WhatsApp Group
Christ Church has a very active church family whatsApp group. It serves as a means of communication and fellowship throughout the week. Each day there is a reading and meditation posted courtesy of the URC, a daily hymn to read and an evening prayer courtesy of The Methodist Church. There is a lot of fun and banter, but it is also an important vehicle for those living alone to keep in contact with the wider church community.
The church has a very active community and our buildings are used 7 days a week.
Sundays: Service at 10:45am and streamed on our YouTube Channel.
Monday: The Meeting Place Social Cafe 9am – 1:30pm.
Warm, welcoming place for those who are lonely and need support in a caring environment. Activities, refreshments and light lunch available. The Meeting Place supports all its members led by Rachel and her team of volunteers. Try your hand at gardening or here the group are enjoying a drumming session

Monday Evening -alternate weeks Stocksbridge Photographic Society
Tuesday Morning: Stocksbridge Art Society.
Join our group of artists who meet weekly throughout the year, painting and drawing with regular guest artists talking about their art.
Tuesday Evening: Steel Valley Beacon Arts.
This is one of two rehearsal evenings held throughout the year. Beacon stage at least two major productions every year and cater for ages 7 upwards. 6-7pm the Under 11’s Group meets and rehearses. 7-9pm rehearsal for Beacons next big production.
Wednesday Morning: Probus and Rhythm & Rhyme.
Don Valley Probus meet every fortnight with guest speakers
Rhythm and Rhyme is a singing and play through song group for babies and toddlers.
Wednesday Evening:
Choir Practice – Our mixed voice church choir rehearse from 7-8:30pm for Sunday worship and other musical events through the year
Stocksbridge WI – Meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm
Bolsterstone Heritage & Archaeological Society – meets on the third Wednesday of every month
Thursday: Lunch Club.
We run a busy lunch club serving drinks and biscuits from 10:30am, followed by activities such as quizzes, chairobics or entertainment. At 12:30 a 2-course hot meal is served by a team of dedicated volunteers. If mobility is a problem, we have our own minibus that will collect you from your home and get you safely home again. We attended the funeral of
Dorothy Utting on Monday and were very impressed by the atmosphere at your church. As guests we were amazed by such hospitality and would like it to be known that it was greatly appreciated. We were warmly welcomed and while there is always sadness at a funeral we felt the whole day was very uplifting.

On behalf of Stocksbridge High School, thank you to everyone at Christ Church for you kind support of our students at this difficult time. The school is not closed but most of our work the the young people and families we serve has had to be through remote means.

I have just received an email from an old friend at Walkley, and they are singing a different carol each Sunday until Christmas. I thought this was good for community well being, and reminding us all of the true spirit of Christmas and rebirth.
I wondered if we could adapt the idea for our area.
If you feel it is appropriate I can raise the issue at Town Council this Thursday.

On the doorstep at 8 00 p.m on a Thursday. My view is that’s a bit late for younger children. We could advertise in look local and local sites.

Dear All,
The pleasure of on line services is that I don’t have to get up on Sunday mornings, being generally a tardy riser, especially at weekends, and we can enjoy them at any time of day which is convenient to us!
All that aside and to be serious, I would like to thank you all for bringing worship into our homes. It has been such a comfort and an uplifting experience during difficult covid times.
I was moved to write this after Simon’s service on January 10th. The lovely pictorial scenes of sunrises across the globe was a real treat coupled with wonderful well known hymns beautifully sung, made it a delightful experience for me.
However. I really want to thank everyone from Christchurch who has made these online services possible. Obviously special heartfelt thanks go to Ian and Gwen particularly.
I always enjoy Ian’s sermons / address which often stimulates thought provoking topics delivered in such an empathetic and compassionate way. He demonstrates a very special gift in the way that he preaches. Thank you Ian.
For me, all the Christmas services were so appreciated culminating in the Christmas Day service from Ian and Gwen’s home. It was so poignant and very special in this year when many of us were separated from our children and grandchildren for the first time ever.
May I also thank so many others that I know have given so much of their time to bring Sunday services to us, not only conducting and participating in services, but also all the technical support and online production.
