Last week Ray and Ronnie Hawley, the volunteer leaders of the Stocksbridge Food Bank, were invited to Buckingham Palace for the Garden Party there.
It might seem an odd juxtaposition of a food bank at a royal garden party, but it is in recognition of the work that Ray and Ronnie and the team of loyal volunteers do week in and week out.
They ensure that the people in Stocksbridge who are in absolute need get the help they need when they need it.
It also recognizes the weekly support from generous people across the town who every week supply food and other household goods to make life possible for members of our community in urgent need.
Ray and Ronnie are members at Christ Church, and the minister there, Rev Ian Lucraft, said: “Ray and Ronnie, with the team of volunteers, have given an enormous amount of time and effort to ensure the Food Bank copes with rising demand, especially as changes to the benefits system mean that peoples’ changing benefits can leave them left without support for a long time before things are sorted out. It is very good to know that their work, with the volunteers team, is recognized in this way.”
Ray said: “Well, what a great few days. The picture (above) shows us walking through the gardens at Buckingham Palace. We had chosen to walk through the gardens to the main garden party reception area from the Hyde Park entrance gate.”
